The red wines of Friuli and the Veneto are made for the table: medium-bodied, fresh and fragrant rather than heavy, with the juicy fruit and fine tannins that suit pasta, grilled meat, salumi and cheese. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grow beside the native Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, and Pinot Nero thrives in the cool Collio hills.
